Old Hudson Plantation, nestled in the piney woods near Sparta, Georgia, has been in Neal Bush’s family since 1779, passed down through his mother’s lineage. Neal, the fifth generation, returned with his wife Nancy when their sons developed an interest in shooting sports. This passion led the family to expand the property’s use from a quiet historic estate into a thriving shooting and hunting venue.
In 2002, the Bushes started a game bird hatchery, initially to train their own bird dogs. The hatchery soon became a commercial operation producing quail and pheasant chicks for guided and unguided hunts from October through March.
Today, Old Hudson Plantation offers a modern Shooting Club featuring skeet, trap, 5-stand, and a 12-station sporting clays course. The venue also hosts community events, including the Lake Oconee Shooting Team (LOST), coached by longtime volunteer Sammy McFaddin. Neal expanded the facilities to support the team after they lost their previous practice field.
The plantation is also known for its Thursday night “Shoot and Eat” gatherings, where members and guests come together to shoot, share a meal, and enjoy camaraderie. From wagon rides and vintage tractors to corporate team-building and competitive shooting games, Old Hudson Plantation has grown into a cherished local hub for outdoor enthusiasts.
Through the dedication of Neal and Nancy Bush, the plantation blends historic legacy with community spirit and sporting tradition, offering a unique retreat for those who love the outdoors.
